The Girl Child| 22mins
Director: Lawrence Chen | Producer: Kevin Hwang
Focus Years: 2007 | Country: United States
Synopsis:
Partnering with the Institute for Women, Gender and Development Studies at Egerton University in Nakuru, Kenya, we investigated poor access to education across age groups in both rural and urban settings and its unequal consequences for women. Traveling to rural villages, we explored the many facets that contribute to this problem, such as low economic standards along with the traditional cultural beliefs that perpetuate contemporary gender inequality, and sought to chronicle the stories of those outstanding young women who have still managed to excel. We produced this documentary to bring to light the interrelationships that tie women’s empowerment to economic development, health care, and the fight against political corruption. "The Girl Child" speaks out from various women leaders across Kenya who have overcome numerous obstacles in order to attain their dreams. In particular, "The Girl Child" follows the life of one young woman and her effort to raise awareness on issues of gender equality in Kenya.
